Bathtub Remodel & Replacement

A bathtub project can mean replacing a worn tub, rebuilding the surrounding walls, or changing how the bathing area fits the room. We inspect the existing tub area and explain what the replacement will involve before you choose materials.

Planning the work

A better tub starts with the space around it.

A tub that is stained, chipped, or uncomfortable can make the whole bathroom feel worn out. But before you order a replacement, it helps to know whether the trouble stops at the tub. A loose surround, soft floor, or recurring leak may mean there is work behind it that deserves attention first.

We look at the bathing area as a whole: the tub, drain, faucet, wall finish, and floor where you step out. If you like the layout, there may be no reason to rearrange the bathroom. Replacing the tub in the same location can keep the project focused while giving you a bathing area that is easier to clean and use.

Choose the tub for the people who use it.

A deep soaking tub looks inviting in a photo. Climbing over its side to bathe a child or take a quick shower is another matter. We talk through who uses the room, whether this is your only bathtub, and how much room you actually have.

Length is only one measurement. The tub’s width, depth, ledge, and inside shape all affect comfort. The opening around it also has to accommodate the new unit. In an older Kansas City house, a narrow stairway or tight turn at the bathroom door can influence what will fit through the house before we ever get to installation.

Bring the model you have been considering, if you have one. We can check its dimensions against the room and talk through anything it changes, including the drain position, faucet arrangement, or surrounding tile.

The surround and plumbing need to work with the replacement.

Pulling a tub can expose water damage around the drain or along the wall. We explain what is visible at the visit and what remains uncertain until the old tub comes out. If we find damaged material, we show you before expanding the agreed work.

The replacement needs proper support, a sound drain connection, and a wall assembly that manages water. Tile is the finish you see; the preparation behind it is part of the job too. We also consider how the surround meets the tub and how the new floor or trim will meet the existing room.

You can choose a simple surround or a tiled finish, depending on the room and your priorities. Storage matters here. A shelf or niche planned early can be more useful than balancing bottles on a narrow tub ledge.

Keep the rest of the bathroom in proportion.

A tub replacement does not automatically require new cabinetry, flooring, and paint throughout the room. We identify where removal will disturb nearby surfaces and include those repairs in the discussion.

Sometimes the most sensible scope is the tub, surround, fixtures, and a small amount of finish repair. Other times the floor or wall condition makes a larger project worth considering. We will work through that distinction with you before demolition.

Plan for the bathing area to be unavailable during the work. If another shower is available, the household has more flexibility. If it is your only place to bathe, we need to discuss that from the start.

Questions about replacing a bathtub

Can we keep the existing tile?

Possibly, but removing the tub can disturb the lower tile and the material behind it. Matching older tile may also be difficult. We inspect the connection and explain the likely repair before promising that the surround can stay.

Should we keep a tub or switch to a shower?

Start with how your household uses the room. If the tub still earns its space, replacing it may be the right choice. If stepping over it is the main problem, our tub-to-shower conversion service is worth a look.

What should I have ready for the visit?

A short list of what bothers you and any tub models you like is enough to begin. We will look at access, take measurements, and discuss the surrounding work.
